Take Advantage of The Howard County Recreation & Parks Department

Did you know that the Howard County Recreation & Parks Department maintains over 9,100 acres of public lands?

It operates parks, nature centers, museums, and more.

Destinations near our Ellicott City apartments include:

Ellicott City Firehouse Museum

Step into the Firehouse Museum, located an eight-minute drive away, to learn about the challenges the city’s firefighters faced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The steep, sloping streets made transporting water difficult and allowed the fire to quickly spread. A group of volunteers constructed the firehouse in 1889. It was the first firehouse in the county and was used to house the horse-drawn and hand-drawn equipment. Today, it’s where visitors can see fire apparatus, model toys, and historic photographs.

Font Hill Wetlands Park

Spanning 26 acres, the Font Hill Wetlands Park offers the opportunity to observe and study wildlife. It’s home to over 104 bird species and one of Howard County’s most prolific populations of dragonflies. A paved path and a wooden boardwalk combine to make a unique trail. It leads through the marsh and showcases native trees and vegetation. Font Hill Wetlands Park is a 10-minute drive away.

Robinson Nature Center

Stretching 18 acres, the Robinson Nature Center is a one-of-a-kind destination. It features geothermal heating/air conditioning and innovative water conservation methods. The center was made possible through the generosity of James and Anne Robinson. They were passionate about the outdoors and wanted to bridge the gap between people and nature. One of the highlights includes the Nature Sphere Planetarium. Found on the mezzanine level, this full-dome theater seats fifty and features fascinating shows.

After visiting the planetarium, head outside to explore the trails. They traverse rugged, wooded terrain and take about 20 to 30 minutes to hike.
